Overview

Located within about 20 minutes from both bridges (13 miles from the Sagamore Bridge and 14.7 miles from the Bourne Bridge) the town of Mashpee is rich in history. Mashpee is the site of the headquarters of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, the original residents of Cape Cod. The name itself is an Anglicization of the original native name, mass-nippe (meaning ‘greater cove’). Mashpee has more than 5 miles of coastal sandy beaches Nantucket and Vineyard Sounds, and also offers waterfront along Waquoit and Popponesset Bays. Mashpee is home to the fun shopping destination of Mashpee Commons, a charmingly built, downtown hub, with shopping, dining, walking and businesses. Well known for its seaside community of New Seabury, Mashpee offers three world-class golf courses and freshwater beaches/ponds. A truly charming destination!

When the English colonists arrived at Massachusetts Bay in the 17th century, the peoples they met were the Wampanoag-speaking Algonquin Tribe who controlled the coastal area. Eventually, these two groups of people interacted and influenced each other in succeeding years. “Mashpee” is the Anglicized “mass-nippe,” literally meaning” greater water,” later translated contextually to mean “the greater cove” or “great pond” or “land near the great cove,” in reference to Wakeby Pond.

Mashpee was incorporated as a town in 1870, which sadly resulted in the Wampanoags’ later losing their lands and self-government. In the 1970s, the Mashpee descendants of those who remained in the area filed but lost a suit against the state to reclaim their lands. However, they continually developed as an organized community and in 2007, acquired federal recognition as a tribe.

Mashpee, Massachusetts town is now presently recognized for its distinctive Wampanoag history and rich culture and as a tourist recreation destination. Various visitors come in the summer, which creates many seasonal businesses and service jobs. The Wampanoag people of Mashpee Massachusetts celebrate a pow-wow every year, where traditional and modern activities and crafts are among the attractions for visitors. A pow-wow is defined as "a North American Indian ceremony involving feasting, singing, and dancing."
